To Know First Aid For Dogs Is More Than Simply Having A First Aid Kit
You probably are familiar with the well-known saying that "Curiosity killed the cat." But dogs are no better since they are definitely inquisitive and known for going places and getting into things that they shouldn't. Even while this doesn't always end badly, they frequently do end up hurting themselves in one way or another so it's a good idea to be familiar with some dog first aid.
About the time my Lhasa Apso was three or four months old she succeeded in finding a previously unknown patch of burrs in the backyard and spent time playing in them for awhile. When she came back inside the house the burrs had worked themselves firmly into spots on her face, her ears and her little behind.
It was after hours so the Vet was not open and a visit to the animal hospital would have been expensive. So she endured my tearful yet laughing efforts as I managed to one by one work those burrs out of her hair as she resisted and yelped for upwards of two hours. They were matted so severely and up next to the skin that cutting them out was not an option.
A tranquilizer of any kind would have been useful but I didn't have anything for her. And because there was no blood or serious injury, taking a trip to the emergency hospital was not required ... that time.
That is a saddening yet interesting story to tell and hopefully an experience she has put behind her over the years. It was also a minor thing although very painful and frustrating for both of us. But it might have been worse.
As a committed pet owner you should know at least basic first aid for dogs to allow you to be prepared for more serious emergencies. You can often save on Vet costs for smaller problems like the one I had. But you may possibly find yourself in a situation where you need to help minimize your pup's pain or perform life-saving actions until you can see the Vet.
Having a dog first aid kit is certainly a good thing but you also need to know what to do and how to react in an actual emergency. Be sure you have phone numbers close by for both your regular Vet as well as the nearby emergency animal facility. And learn about basic canine first aid yourself.
I've never needed to provide life-saving medical actions for my dog and maybe you haven't needed to either. But would you know simply how much to do if faced with a life-threatening situation with regards to your own dog?
